sick eyes

Vascular eye disease can develop when blood flow is blocked or there is a leakage of fluid within a retinal vessel. This vessel helps support the retina with the oxygen and important nutrients it needs to function properly. Although vascular eye diseases are often painless, many will feel hypertension, causing headaches and feelings of being under the weather. Patients with more extreme conditions, like temporal or giant cell arteritis, can experience weeks of headaches, jaw pain, lethargy and more. If you have any of these symptoms, we strongly recommend coming in to see Dr. Jeffery Graf OD FAAO for an assessment.

There are many different conditions that cause vascular eye disease. These include:

  • Diabetic or hypertensive retinopathy
  • Retinal vein and artery occlusion
  • High blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Age
  • Being overweight
  • Smoking and using other tobacco products
  • Giant cell arteritis
  • Significant heart problems and blood disorders
  • Blood clots and blockage in the arteries
